The lighting can be difficult yet spectacular with these narrow canals. There is one photo of a beautiful canal in Venice in this collection that looks like a painting. You can see by the white sky that I had to artifically brighten this one up (like the some of the others). All these old narrow canals have incredible beauty about them in my opinion.
